Bible Study Tools defines experience this way “The Bible use of the word is not different from the ordinary, which means “the sum of practical wisdom taught by the events and observations of life,” or, to go a little farther, the personal and practical acquaintance with what is so taught.” You can read the whole article Here.
Lets look at the Samaritan woman’s experience with Jesus.
Here we have an outcast woman whose name is not mentioned going to get water alone in the heat of the day instead of the cool of the morning with the other women. She was an outcast because people stereotyped and judged her based in her sins. No one took the time of day to get to know who she was personally, the real inside woman. Her experience was one of loneliness, shame, devalue, heartache, marginalized, worthlessness, and ostracized.
Here, she comes from a distance of about a half mile outside the city of the Samaritan town of Sychar she is going to draw water at the well (Jacobs well).
Jesus intentionally went through Samaria instead of around it. He was tired from his journey and sat down by the well.
Along comes the woman and she notices a man at the well, and a Jew at that. She has an experience with this unknown man when he asks for a drink of water. And, she says to him “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” (Jews did not associate with Samaritans).
So Jesus says the her “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.” So now she asks where to get this living water from. And, asks Jesus to give her this living water so that she will not thurst again.
But First, Jesus calls her out on her sins, specifically her having had many husbands, and not being married to the man she is with. She thinks he is a prophet.
The woman tells him that she knows Messiah is coming and that he will explain everything to them, the people.
So now Jesus says “I, the one speaking to you—I am he.” Wow! What powerful declaration. Can you imagine her shock, delight, joy when she realized HE, Jesus was indeed the Messiah?
Her experience with him led her to know that God loves her in spite of her downfalls and imperfections. Now she knows She is wanted, valued, she is Loved, she is cared for. and that God actively sought her, and welcomes her into intimacy, rejoice and worship. And rejoice she did!!!
Her experience with Jesus now led her to understand all of these things. She indeed received grace.
Pause And Reflect
Only through Jesus can we receive eternal life. All people are valuable to God. Jesus is the Messiah.
“Salvation comes only to those who confess and repent of their sin and desire forgiveness. Before this immoral woman could embrace the Savior, she had to concede the full burden of her sins.” (Got Questions).
